Chiropractic Explained
What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic is a Greek word meaning “to use your hands”. Chiropractors localise, analyse and correct vertebral subluxations (misalignments) from the spine. These subluxations can interfere with the messages getting through from the body to the brain, the brain does not get the right message and sends out the wrong answer to the body. This results in the body being in a state of “dis-ease,” where it is no longer in harmony with itself or a state of homeostasis. We use many methods to locate these subluxations, including analysing your posture, spinal and muscle palpation, range of motion testing, orthopedic and muscle tests.
Over 100 years ago, D.D. Palmer (the Founder of Chiropractic) had a “big idea” – the idea that good health can be sustained naturally, without drugs or surgery, through Chiropractic Care. Today, Chiropractic is the second largest licensed health care profession. The nervous system controls the functions of every tissue, organ, and system in the body. Stresses, such as physical, chemical, and emotional can affect how the body functions and lead to your body no longer being in harmony with itself.
Chiropractic Care is about helping the body and brain communicate better with each other. By remedying nerve interferences, the body is better able to heal itself. Dr. Rosina states, “it is not my job to heal your body: it knows how to heal itself, it just needs no interference to its communication system.” This is similar to a broken bone, it’s not the cast that heals - the cast keeps the bones immobile while the body heals the break by making new cells. Chiropractic Care promotes the messages to travel through the nervous system effectively so the body can heal itself to the best of its ability. Chiropractic's approach identifies the underlying causes, not just the symptoms. By helping restore healthy nerve function, your body is given the best chance to heal and repair.
Seeing a chiropractor can benefit your body and wellbeing in many ways. Vertebral subluxations can cause headaches, migraines, sinus or hayfever, ear infections, temporomandibular (TMJ)/jaw problems, neck, shoulder, midback, hip, knee, or low back pain. They can also be the cause of digestive and breathing issues such as asthma, heartburn, indigestion, constipation, or bloating.
