Pain Free Therapy

Effectiveness of PhotoBioModulation Therapy

For years, physicians have been using Low-Level Laser Therapy, now known as PhotoBioModulation (PBM), for people looking for an effective alternative for pain relief. Since the 1960s, there have been over 2,500 clinical studies published worldwide. Many of these studies have demonstrated PBM Therapy to be a proven method for pain relief. PBM Therapy is a treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissue and is thought to help speed up the healing process. It can be used on patients who suffer from various chronic and acute conditions to help eliminate pain, swelling, inflammation and increase functionality.

How PhotoBioModulation Lasers Work

PhotoBioModulation Lasers are handheld devices used by the Therapist and are often the size of a flashlight. The laser is placed directly over the injured area for 30 seconds to several minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated and the dose provided by the laser unit. During this time, the nonthermal protons of light emitted from the laser pass through the skin layers (the dermis, epidermis, and subcutaneous tissue or tissue fat under the skin). This light has the ability to penetrate 2 to 5 centimetres below the skin at 90mw and 830nm.

How PhotoBioModulation Works

When cells are stressed, oxidative stress occurs. Oxidative stress is when cells are around the injury or area, affected make it slow or unable to heal. This can lead to an increase in inflammation and pain due to reduced ATP production. ATP is the principal molecule for storing and transferring energy in cells abling the injury/area to heal. PBM stimulates your lymph nodes (white blood cells) that help the body fight infection and disease. PBM helps the lymph glands drain faster.

Sports Injuries

Sports injuries involving trauma to soft tissue, tendons, and ligaments have been shown to have accelerated recovery from 35% - 50%. Research has also shown that PBM reduces pain, inflammation, joint swelling and can significantly reduce the time to turn a non-weight bearing injury into a weight-bearing one. It also aids in bone healing and improves the range of motion of a joint. Ask us for more information or research if you are interested.

Post Operative Therapy

PhotoBioModulation (PBM) has proven to be highly beneficial when introduced soon after surgery or injury to nerves, tendons, ligaments, muscles and bones. Continued treatment will effectively minimize the appearance of scars and assist in reducing tissue adhesion and the formation of thick raised keloid scars that can sometimes occur in certain skin types or parts of the body, such as the chest, inner and upper arm areas.

“PhotoBioModulation does more than relieve the pain - it helps heal the body!”

Is it a cure-all?

No, PBM Therapy is not a panacea, but in certain disease conditions, it works very well and can be very beneficial to optimal health and performance. It is validated in many clinical trials at world-renown research institutions.

What does PBM Therapy have over other therapy?

It does not require the use of drugs or surgery, there are fewer side effects or risks, and it is quick and convenient. Studies have shown that it is equal to or more effective than other forms of physical therapy.

Does it hurt? What does the treatment feel like?

There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally one feels mild, soothing warmth. There is no pain associated with the PBM application. PBM treatment is relaxing; however, sometimes pain can increase or temporarily worsen 12-24 hours after the treatment session. This is because the laser light starts the healing process. This type of pain is particularly likely to arise when health problems are chronic in their nature. It usually subsides after a few days but can, in rare cases, last longer. This is a normal reaction, and if it occurs, it will subside.

How long does the treatment take?

The typical course of treatment is 10-20 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Acute conditions may be treated daily, particularly if they are accompanied by significant pain. More chronic problems respond better when treatments are received 2-3 times a week.

Treatment plans are determined on an individual basis.

How many treatments does it take?

This depends on the nature of the condition being treated. For some acute conditions, 6-8 treatments may be sufficient. More chronic conditions may require 10-14 sessions. Conditions such as severe arthritis may require ongoing periodic care to control pain.

How long before results are felt?

You may feel improvement in your condition (usually pain reduction) after the very first treatment. Not everyone responds to PBM Therapy, and results can not be guaranteed. Each treatment is cumulative, and results are often felt after 2-4 sessions. Treatments take a few minutes; however, the therapeutic effect continues to soothe and heal long after you leave our clinic.

Are the results long-lasting?

PhotoBioModulation Therapy is not about masking or covering up a condition. When you feel better from this therapy, it's because you are healing. Results have been found to be quite long-lasting; however, you may need periodic follow-up treatments.

Can it be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment?

Yes, PBM Therapy is even more effective when combined with other forms of therapy and following surgery. We combine our therapy with specialized chiropractic and medical massage techniques that can help to relieve your symptoms faster.

How do I know if PhotoBioModulation Therapy is right for me?

The only way to know is to try a course of Therapy.

We will evaluate your condition and perform a complete PBM therapy examination to determine if you are a candidate for this procedure. Dr Rosina may recommend a course of PBM with your Chiropractic care to help improve your healing.

Can laser therapy be used over medical implants or over metal?

Yes, PBM Therapy is a light treatment. No heating is involved with the surgical or metal implants. It can be used safely with no side effects.

It is extremely effective for post-operative wound healing. Many hip and knee replacement patients use this therapy.
